Africare To Host The #Fast4Hunger Challenge in Recognition of World Hunger Day

WASHINGTON, May 7, 2013 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Africare, a non-profit organization committed to improving the lives of people in Africa, will host a #Fast4Hunger Challenge on World Hunger Day, Tuesday May 28, 2013, to raise awareness of the 868 million chronically hungry people world-wide, 98 percent of whom live in developing countries.

The #Fast4Hunger Challenge is a social-media fueled campaign that will encourage a fasting pledge from participants - be it several hours or a day -- to better grasp the plight of food insecure families who do not know from where their next meal will come. Participants can then share their experiences with Africare through Twitter, Facebook and Instagram messages using the hashtags #Fast4Hunger or #Fast4HungerChallenge. Participants can take the #Fast4Hunger pledge by going to www.africare.org and downloading the #Fast4Hunger Challenge Toolkit.

Africare will also facilitate a Twitter chat with multiple donors and partners including allAfrica.com, Dreaming Out Loud and the general public on Tuesday May 28, 2013 from noon until 3 p.m.

"Chronic hunger torments hundreds of millions, but most of the global population is largely disconnected from the problem. #Fast4Hunger is an opportunity for people to begin understanding the severity of global hunger, viscerally and intellectually, and to learn how they can become part of its solution," explained Kendra Davenport, Africare's Chief Development and Communications Officer.

In 2012, Africare implemented Agriculture & Food Security projects in 16 of its 19 project countries including Tanzania, where Africare interventions allowed nutrition services to reach more than 96,500 children, and Ghana, where Africare directly reached 2,000 farmers through training meetings and plot demonstrations and approximately 25,000 beneficiaries through outreach via newspapers, television coverage and educational, call-in radio broadcasts.
