SMC band concert April 12
Apr 04, 2013 (Dowagiac Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
The SMC Spring Band Concert, featuring the symphonic and brass bands, as well as selected small ensembles, will be held in the theater of the Dale A. Lyons Building on the college's Dowagiac campus April 12. The concert, which begins at 7:30 p.m., will be under the direction of Dr. Jon Korzun, director of SMC bands.
The highlight of this concert will be "Blue and Green Music" by Samuel Hazo performed by the SMC Symphonic Band. This piece was inspired by the abstract painting "Blue and Green Music" by Georgia O'Keeffe.
O'Keeffe created the painting with the idea that music could be translated into something for the eye. The Symphonic Band will perform a piece of music inspired by a painting that was inspired by music. Taking this chain of inspiration one step further, SMC art students created works of art inspired by the musical composition "Blue and Green Music" and well as the painting. These art works will be included in the concert.
The Brass Band, Flute Choir and Trombone Quartet will also be performing. Symphonic Band selections also include the march "New Holland" by Harry Neidermyer, "Bayou Breakdown" by Brant Karrick and "On The Banks of the River Shannon" by Jason Nitsch.
Selections by the Brass Band include the march "Under the Double Eagle" by Josef Franz Wagner, Fanfare from the ballet "La Peri" by Paul Dukas and "Mountain Views" by Bertrand Moren.
The Symphonic Band and Brass Band will combine forces to perform "Pines of the Appian Way" by Ottorino Respighi.
General admission tickets cost $7; $5 for students and senior citizens, with those 18 and under admitted free.
