Replacements coming for new Marianna trash bins

Jan 10, 2013 (Jackson County Floridan - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Marianna's residential trash cans took on a different look last week, as new service provider Waste Pro began delivering its blue-lidded receptacles.

On the side of those containers, however, is a phone number for Waste Pro's Bradenton/Sarasota-area facility -- information that is not of use to local customers.

At Monday's city commission meeting, City Manager Jim Dean said he understood the error to be with Waste Pro's bin supplier, not Waste Pro itself.

That supplier will replace the approximately 2,000 cans, a process expected to begin next week.

New bins, Dean said, should have no phone number printed on them.

Another trash-related item came up at the Monday's meeting: residential waste bins left roadside on non-pickup days.

The commission is looking into the possibility of adding regulations to the city code that would dictate when and how long customers are allowed to leave their trash containers at the street.

Commissioners John Roberts and Paul Donofro Jr. mentioned aesthetics and safety concerns, respectively, as reasons the city might want to formally address the issue in its code, though Roberts conceded enforcement could be problematic.

Opposition was voiced by Commissioner Travis Ephriam, who said some may feel that a move to regulate the placement of trash cans would, "essentially turn the whole city into a neighborhood association." "We're going to try to make this city a pleasant place to live in, as far as the way it looks, Roberts said.

"I don't think it's too much to ask the people in the City of Marianna to take their garbage cans off the street and put them on the side of their house." No action was taken Monday, but the commission asked City Attorney Frank Bondurant to review a Tallahassee ordinance that could serve as a model for Marianna.
