WCMH Columbus: Ohio "Stimulus" Program Creates Jobs In Central America
Jul 30, 2010 (Congressional Documents and Publications/ContentWorks via COMTEX) --
For a White House desperate to spin the failed record of its trillion-dollar "stimulus" during what it has dubbed "Recovery Summer," there has been no time to rest.
First there was the embarrassing news that President Obama's trip to Columbus, Ohio, to kick off this massive PR campaign would actually put hard-working Ohioans out of work for the day. Now thanks to a report from WCMH-TV in Columbus highlighting Ohio Governor Ted Strickland's (D) questionable handling of the state's "stimulus" cash-for-fridges program, it appears the White House could soon receive new suggestions for its next road stop: Central America.
President Obama, with the support of Governor Strickland, promised that the "stimulus" would create jobs almost immediately - but Central America isn't quite what most people had in mind.
In a news release this morning, Ohio members of Congress joined Boehner in expressing outrage over this misuse of taxpayer dollars.
Rep. Steve LaTourette (R-Bainbridge), the most senior member of the Ohio Delegation had this to say:
It's no wonder only 6% of Americans believe that the Stimulus Bill created any jobs. To be fair, it does look like Governor Strickland used the funds to create some jobs - in Central America. To suggest an Ohio company couldn't be trusted to run the appliance rebate program is insulting, and paying a Texas company nearly half a million dollars to use a call center in another country is astounding. This is not Cash for Appliances, it's Cash for Incompetence.
Making matters worse, this latest boondoggle could have been easily avoided. Shortly after the "stimulus" was enacted, Ohio Republican members encouraged Gov. Strickland to create an independent, bipartisan oversight board to monitor; he refused.
Unless Central America happens to be home to the long-lost 00th Congressional District of Ohio, this is just the latest example of why it's long past time Washington Democrats' scrapped their failed "stimulus" and worked with House Republicans to cut government spending and provide the fiscal discipline that more than 100 economists say is needed to create jobs and get our economy moving again.
