Cell Phones More Popular Than iPods for IPTV

A survey of 320 U.S. consumers who view IPTV content on their mobile devices found that 36% view this content on their cell phone, while 17% use iPods with video capabilities to do so. An additional 14% use their Blackberry for this purpose.

The survey was conducted this month by The Equs Group, Inc., a market research firm based in San Jose.

Other mobile devices lagged in usage for ITPV viewing. Both MP3 players and PDAs accounted for 6% of IPTV (News - Alert) usage. Window’s SmartPhone was 5%, Palm’s Treo was 4%, Non-Window SmartPhones were 3% and Palm’s T/X and Tungsten were 2% each.

“This data highlights the fact that no one mobile device has captured consumer interest sufficiently to become the primary means of viewing IPTV content”, says Al Nazareli, CEO of The EQUS Group. “That said, cell phones are leading the pack, most likely due to their ubiquity. To maintain that lead, mobile device manufacturers and cell phone carriers must ensure that future functionalities and features are innovative and user-friendly.”

The survey is part of a larger study, “Big Screen Plasma to iPod: Mobile Devices as the New Entertainment Platform,” to be released by The EQUS Group in May.
