Pakistan Gets Mobile Number Portability

TMCnet Assistant Editor

Citizens of Pakistan have more to celebrate today than just the National Day of Pakistan. Now, residents are also able to benefit from mobile number portability (MNP) —making it easier to switch carriers without having to worry about the costs or concerns of changing phone numbers.

Implemented today, mobile operators Telcordia and Pakistan MVP Database (Guarantee) Limited (PMD) signed a contract to provide the capabilities of MNP for the country.

As per the contract, Telcordia provided their Number Portability Clearinghouse solution which offers quick, easy and accurate number porting between providers via an interconnection process.

Number portability allows subscribers to keep their same phone number even when they change service providers. This is becoming increasingly popular for both wireless and fixed line phone services and provides customers with more options as well as offers providers options for improving revenues and offering new services.

"Number portability is reshaping telecom on a global scale and the clearinghouse solution allows operators to be more responsive to customers while providing regulators with a powerful and flexible way to manage number portability," commented Richard Jacowleff, President, Interconnection Solutions, Telcordia in a statement to the press.

According to a news release three other Pakistan mobile carriers have also turned to Telcordia for their number porting needs and have selected Telcordia's Number Portability Gateway (News - Alert) solution to provide improved operator costs and management for port requests.

Telecordia's number portability solutions also support fixed-line number portability.
