Verizon gets California video franchise

(Wall Street US Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) California's Public Utility Commission has awarded California's first video franchise to Verizon Communications Inc. Despite the state-wide scope of the franchise, Verizon will only be able to provide its FiOS television service to areas where it has already set up fiber-optic lines. The decision means that the telecommunications company is just days away from offering service to thousands of consumers, according to Verizon's West region president Tim McCallion.
