VoIP Browser Service Needs No Downloads

TMCnet Web Editor

UK VoIP operator Group 3 Technology has unveiled a web-browser based Internet Phone service called VePhone that gives users a UK telephone number accessible on a standard web page with no software to download.

G3T claims VePhone is the first product in the world that allows consumers to enjoy the benefits of internet telephony without having to download any software.

“For the first time in the world our users can access free telephone calls on the move from any PC in the world with access to the internet,” said G3T CEO Gerry Leighton, in a statement. “VePhone can have the same impact on Internet telephony as hotmail managed for email!”

Calls between VePhones are free, and savings of up to 90% are available on calls to international landlines and mobiles.  VePhone is also compatible with G3T’s other services and enables free calls to ePhone and NETePhone users.

According to the company, the UK Telephone Number is portable and can be used anywhere globally by logging in to the website. There are no monthly contracts or line rentals, making VePhone ideal for use as a second line or for travel abroad.

VePhone uses’s G3T’s patented e2e Technology, which sets up calls directly between users to ensure better quality and resilience than hosted Internet service providers, according to the company.

Initially available for use with Internet Explorer, several upgrades are planned in 2007 which will include compatibility with other browsers such as Mozilla, and availability on mobile devices and PDA’s running the Opera OS.

VePhone will be available March 30 at the company’s website.
