U.S. Wireless Provider Implements Nighthawk Systems

TMCnet Contributing Editor

Nighthawk Systems (News - Alert), Inc., a provider of intelligent wireless power control and emergency notification products, has reportedly received an initial order for hundreds of its PT1000 remote control boards from one of the largest U.S. wireless voice and data companies.

Nighthawk has had a previous relationship with the customer who will use the PT1000s to comply with rules recently adopted by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. The new rules restrict the use of diesel generators on days when the air quality in New Jersey is at unhealthy or hazardous levels.

The customer will use the custom firmware developed by Nighthawk specifically for the project. The solution will ensure that diesel generators at their cell tower sites in Northern New Jersey are not tested or exercised on days when such use is prohibited.

The company points out that the diesel generators must be exercised regularly to ensure that they are in working order when emergencies occur. According to the new regulations in New Jersey, diesel generators of 37kW or greater are restricted to ensure that New Jersey’s air quality does not get worse on days with unhealthy air.

Diesel generator operators should therefore find a way to exercise the generators on allowed days, even though they cannot predict those days ahead of time.

H. Douglas Saathoff, Nighthawk’s CEO believes that remote control of diesel generators represents a huge opportunity for Nighthawk.

Saathoff said that there is strong support for similar legislation throughout the United States, and this customer has additional locations in New Jersey which must be controlled.

“By quickly customizing our firmware for this project, we give our customer the ability to control their diesel generators remotely, from centralized locations and in specified groups, without visiting the individual cell tower sites,” explained Saathoff.

“We’re helping our customer comply with environmentally friendly legislation without negatively affecting their operations,” he concluded.

Nighthawk provides intelligent wireless power control products that enable simultaneous activation or de-activation of multiple assets or systems on demand. Nighthawk’s installed customer base includes major electric utilities, Internet service providers and fire departments in over 40 states.
