There remains little doubt regarding the significance of SIP — Session Initiation Protocol — and the profound effect it has had on the IP Telephony industry. SIP is an IETF signaling protocol for Internet conferencing, telephony, presence, events notification, and instant messaging, and many developers are beginning to realize the tremendous potential of writing applications to take advantage of this standard. SIP Developers Day is a full-day conference designed to educate conferees on the subject of SIP. Topics include:

  • Introduction to SIP;

  • SIP for Instant Messaging and Presence;

  • SIP & H.323 Interworking;

  • SIP for Next-generation Mobile Services;

  • and more!

Session Descriptions

9:45 - 10:30 am
The Basics of SIP
Jeffrey R. Sczcepanski, CTO & Founder, Allworx
Alan Percy, Product Marketing Manager, Audiocodes

SIP, or Session Initiation Protocol, is (as the name implies) a next-generation protocol designed for use in call setup and call control. And as ubiquitous as this protocol may seem if you were to look at any vendor's marketing materials, SIP is far from being deployed everywhere. But that is changing. SIP is constantly evolving. This session will serve as an introduction to SIP; what it is, and how developers can take advantage of all it has to offer. Other topics of discussion include SIP and 3G wireless, the use of SIP in next-gen cable telephony, SIP's role in Presence and Instant Messaging technologies, and more.

10:45 - 11:30 am
Developing IP Mobile Services
Arjun Roychowdhury, Product Manager, Hughes Software Systems

Examine the use of industry standard open platforms for the development of converged IP mobile data services with particular relevance to SIP in 2.5G and 3G networks. It explores the market opportunity for wireless application servers and how they are key to evolving wireless networks. It discusses some of the key tools and APIs that are driving service creation in the wireless segment and the services that may evolve to be incorporated in next-generation wireless networks. It will also cover some of the key technologies and standards that are emerging to enable an open and interoperable environment for the delivery of these services. Service examples and applications areas are also discussed.

11:45 am - 12:30 pm
Presence Applications in the Real World
Patrick Ferriter, Director of Product Marketing, Zultys

Get an overview on how enterprise presence applications can be deployed in public SIP networks, (e.g., MSN), resulting in vastly-improved productivity tools that foster communication between end users and customers, suppliers and other mission-critical parties.

1:30 - 2:15 pm
SIP? NAT? NOT! Traversing the Firewall for SIP Call Completion
Jim Greenway, VP of Marketing, Kagoor Networks
Steve Johnson, President, Ingate Systems

Securing the network has always been of utmost importance, but it's become an even more pressing issue these days. Carriers thinking about implementing SIP in their networks have a number of concerns at the network's edge, including the need to assert some sort of control on the signaling and media streams entering the network, the need to prevent unauthorized access, and how to deal with Network Address Translation (NAT) issues that would otherwise render the network useless to SIP calls. Join us for this session as we delve into the world of SIP, and the protocol's relationship with NATs, firewalls, and so much more.

2:30 pm- 4:30 pm Special Double Session
SIP APP FEST
Boris Fridman, COO, SJ Labs
William Zhang, Director of Technology, Grandstream Networks

Emerging SIP applications are taking center stage in the next-gen network. Come to this special double session to discover the leading applications, as presenters walk you through the ins and outs of their latest SIP-based applications. You'll see a wide variety of applications in messaging, conferencing, and other hot areas enabled by this up-and-coming standard.
