Getting into the VoIP business as a local service or PBX replacement is not without significant capex. Service providers of all sizes and makes – from Bells to startups – are choosing resale instead. Our expert panel speaks to the business case, including financial and regulatory considerations, as well as what to look for in a service provider.

2:20 - 3:20 pm
The Evolving Core of the New Network

Dan Dearing, VP of Marketing, NexTone Communications
The evolving new network places session controller technologies at the edge normalizing traffic hand-off between peering points. But the impact of session controllers on the network edge is simply the first step. In many ways, the technology is better suited for the core of the network, where advanced features can greatly enhance carrier profit margins. In the core, session controllers have replaced the softswitch as the network's nerve center. This session will discuss the synergistic relationship between session controllers and softswitch technologies and the benefits of core session controller technology and the current network infrastructure limitations that are driving carriers to adopt it.

3:25 - 4:25 pm

Triple Play I: A Technology View
This session looks at how broadband technologies and packet communications form together flexible architectures demanded by the triple play services. Attendees will have the opportunity to uncover how triple play services lead to a tighter integration between the "digital pipes", service delivery and service management layers.

4:40 - 6:00 pm

Triple Play II: A Business View

Come prepared to ask tough questions and find new ways to look at a business model which was first put in place over 120 years ago. Will the triple play allow you to still make money, even if VoIP becomes "free"?

Tales from the Trenches

Dr. Arun Sobti, Chairman & CEO, IP Unity
Simply selling flat-rate high-speed Internet access and VoIP to residential subscribers is not a compelling formula for network operators, who face heavy competition from traditional and new providers. What are the services and service bundles which will drive carriers' ARPU and protect their margins? Carrier customer spokespeople will present real-world cases from Asia, North America, and Europe, revealing how carriers and their vendors have selected and deployed profitable and market-tunable service bundles, and how the bundles have increased subscriber bases, revenues and margins.

Security in the IP Telephony Network

Micaela Giuhat, AVP Product Management, Netrake
Chris Miller, Distinguished Member, Technical Staff, Lucent Worldwide Services, Lucent Technologies, Inc.

The implementation of IP telephony is being completed at a record rate without the thought of security for the voice communications. There have been thoughts and ideas on how to secure the IP telephony transactions and communications with the need to now bring this technology into the real world environments. Adding security to the list of needs in IP telephony is a relatively new concept in many environments and the need is to make sure that there are standards for the process. This discussion will focus on the integration of features and protocols into the mixture of IP telephony to verify the security of the infrastructure within the IP telephony network.

3:00 - 4:00 pm
Introduction to Hosted VoIP

Shawn Lewis, CEO, Caerus
Rich Grange, President & CEO, New Global Telecom

Service providers looking for that "sticky app" that will keep enterprise customers coming back for more (and paying that monthly premium to do so) would do well to consider offering Hosted VoIP or IP Centrex services as a way to differentiate themselves. A savvy service provider will be able to bundle not only traditional phone functions such as hold, transfer, conference, etc… but also next-generation services such as unified communications, Web-enabled directory services, and more. Come see what the buzz is all about, and learn what Hosted VoIP can do for you.

Day 3 — Wednesday, October 6

8:15 - 9:15 am
The State of Session Border Control

Kaushik Patel, Director of Product Marketing, MediaRing
Jim Greenway, VP of Marketing, Kagoor Networks

Increased adoption of VoIP technology by carriers, and its integration within different segments of telco business, has seen the emergence of VoIP islands globally. Service providers must interconnect their networks with partner networks for exchange of voice traffic. This session will highlight the emergence of network elements called session/border controllers (SBCs), which are designed to enable VoIP carriers to inter-connect carrier, enterprise, and residential networks at the IP layer. SBCs are key to NAT and firewall traversal, along with resolving interoperability, interworking and security requirements critical for large-scale deployments of VoIP. Come to this session and discover the state of session border control.

1:00 - 1:45 pm
The Role of VoIP in Cable Telephony

Simon McIver, Director of Enterprise Products, Net2Phone
Larry Greenstein, Director of Product Management, Nuera Communications

MSOs are coming face to face with an incredible market opportunity to offer advanced voice, video, and data services to their existing base of customers, commonly referred to as the "Triple Play." Yankee Group predicts that even with declining call revenues from telephony, MSOs are likely to realize an increase in overall revenues if telephony services are offered as part of a wider bundle of applications. VoIP holds tremendous promise, with the potential to be one of the foundations of the triple play offering. Come to this session and learn what the future holds in store for cable operators and the significant role of VoIP for their success.

2:00 - 2:45 pm
E911 in a VoIP World

Gregory L. Rohde, Executive Director, E911 Institute
Tim Lorello, SVP, Chief Marketing Officer, Telecommunication Systems

Nationwide, an estimated 200 million calls are made to 911 each year. In areas serviced by enhanced 911, the call is routed to the proper local 911 center for the caller location, and the local 911 center has equipment and database information that display the caller's phone number and address to the call taker. With the transition to VoIP and WiFi telephony, tracing emergency calls and tracking the caller's location becomes more challenging. Furthermore, regulatory issues surrounding E911 remain at the forefront of the telecommunications discussion in Washington, D.C. Come to this session and learn all about this compelling topic.
