[Go to Industrial Computer Update]

Redundancy, applications, size, fault-tolerance, compatible, hot-swappable, robust the more features lumped on industrial computers, the more communications can benefit. Todays industrial computers have oodles of storage, an abundance of redundant features to provide uptime to the nines, and the speed of Wile E. Coyote all hopped-up on Acme-branded coffee products.

The industrial computers rugged good looks belie a confidence that is hard-wired inside they are designed to maximize power efficiency and to provide a solid foundation for applications to run by utilizing a full-service approach to needs-fulfillment. From temperature control to storage, redundancy of memory to uptime management if its industrial, its been well thought out and its been tested.

Choosing the proper industrial computer platform to meet your development and deployment needs requires some serious planning. Not only must you consider your startup hardware requirements, while keeping in mind future additions and changes. The products listed in this roundup are only a small section of the stronghold of industrial computers available from these vendors, but use it as a foundation for building your own solid computing infrastructure.

Monrovia, CA 91016
626-305-8484
www.gnp.com

ComputeNode2U, ComputeNode3U, and ComputeNode4U provide Network Equipment Providers (NEPs) with the high density and horizontal scalability necessary to build or expand carrier-grade servers for DNS, firewall, Web-hosting, softswitches, media gateways and controllers for IP, wireless, optical, or any other mission-critical network systems. The ComputeNode series offers the greatest slot density available on the market today, enabling NEPs to add storage, I/O interface cards, additional processors, Ethernet switches, and expansion cards to network servers. GNPs patent-pending cooling-system design overcomes one of the greatest obstacles to high density dissipating the heat generated by high power consumption CPU boards and the new cPCI cards designed for high density and high performance. The efficient cooling is achieved using hot-swappable fans mounted between the cards and power supplies, rather than the conventional approach of mounting the fans at either end. A built-in alarm card provides basic alarming features like fan, power monitoring, and status LED, without requiring a separate cPCI slot. Configurable with various processors Sun, Intel, PowerPC, and custom-designed the ComputeNode products provide high-performance flexibility and ease of support in compact units.

Industrial Computer Update

BY CHRIS DONNER

The industrial computer space is a difficult one to watch closely, as there are so many varied applications that require industrial platforms to run reliably and securely. Even just within the realm of communications, there are service providers (traditional and next-gen), call/contact centers, e-commerce platforms, enterprise communications systems all of these and more require industrial systems to ensure that things stay up and running.

So whats new? Well, certainly there have been significant increases in efficiency and throughput in cPCI backplanes in the past few years. More and more, we see systems that support Ethernet into the backplane (PICMG 2.16), from idea originators like Performance Technologies as well as from traditional industry drivers like Force Computers and Radisys. Also, Infiniband continues to make a play in this space. If developments continue at this rate, the next-gen backplane is likely to look very different from what it is today, perhaps even only a year or two from now.

Of course, a call center or enterprise telecom/IT manager is probably not going to be concerned about developments in the realm of CompactPCI or PICMG 2.16-enabled backplanes their needs are different. Which is partly what makes it so complicated to cover the space in the first place. To these people, an industrial computer means a rock-solid system: Reliable first, but also with enough processing power to handle VoIP, call control functions, etc. Here we also see the importance of distributors and systems integrators, like Alliance Systems, providing the necessary support for the resellers and others who deploy their systems daily.
