Teaming up with local recycling company to dispose of end-of-life Cisco (News - Alert) PIX appliances, Astaro Corporation, a vendor of security appliances, has announced that the company will be working with Go Green Global Recycling Company. With this ongoing promotion, PIX users can exchange their outdated PIX units and get a 20 percent discount on Astaro (News - Alert) Security Gateway appliances.

Go Green Global Recycling tries to reduce the enormous amount of waste that ends up in landfills by working with Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Go Green has a policy where nothing gets thrown away and all materials are sorted and properly recycled at various domestic facilities. Collecting electronics, metal, bottles and cans, cardboard, cartridges, car batteries and mixed paper, the company offers its services for businesses and individuals. It also provides shredding and data destruction services.

A press release from Astaro quotes the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which states that electronic waste (e-waste) is one of the most quickly growing waste problems worldwide. According to agency, the more than 13 billion pounds of e-waste plastics will be produced from computer e-waste alone in the next decade.

This crisis is not only about the unbelievable quantity of the waste generated, it’s also about the toxic nature of e-waste. Vast amounts of toxic materials such as lead, beryllium, mercury, cadmium, and brominated flame retardants are contained within the growing mountains of e-waste around the world, says the report.

“Astaro wants to do its part to reduce the physical waste and environmental toxins produced through the disposal of electronics that have been end-of-lifed,” said Astaro CEO Jan Hichert. In addition, recycling the materials from hardware appliances will help to conserve our natural resources, as well as reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions that result from the mining and manufacturing process.”
