Dell to Match Green Contributions in Celebration of Earth Day

With Earth Day fast approaching, Dell (News - Alert) has announced it is kicking off its celebration of the holiday starting tomorrow and will match all of its customers contributions made to "Plant a Tree for Me."

"Plant a Tree for Me" is the company's program aimed at helping customers to offset their carbon impact from the electricity that is required to power the systems they use.

The new Earth Day campaign is another step toward Dell's goal of becoming the "greenest" technology company on the planet.

As per their latest Green initiative, Dell has said it will match consumer contributions of $2 to help offset the carbon impact from a laptop purchase and will match $6 to offset the carbon impact from a desktop purchase.

"Through 'Plant a Tree for Me,' we are providing customers a simple but tangible way to make a difference for the planet," said Michael Tatelman, vice president of Dell's consumer business. "We cannot think of a better occasion to partner with our customers and give back to the Earth we all share."

One hundred percent of the contributions Dell receives are given to The Conservation Fund and the Carbonfund.org.

With the contributions, the non-profit organizations plant trees in sustainably managed reforestation projects.

"Dell led the industry in its direct-to-consumer approach, set the bar in product recycling, and now, through programs like 'Plant a Tree for Me', is leading the industry to address two of our world's most pressing environmental challenges -- habitat loss and climate change," said The Conservation Fund's president, Larry Selzer.

Dell has also announced they are extending these green efforts to small business customers and will, through the month of April, match contributions from small business customers when they purchase business laptops, desktops and servers.

According to CarbonFund.org, customer contributions to "Plant a Tree for Me" in 2007 are estimated to help remove approximately 150 million pounds of CO2. This, the company says, is equivalent to offsetting the carbon impact of the electricity required to power more than 225,000 laptops.

As part of their Earth Day celebrations, Dell has also said that customers in the United States will receive instant savings on Earth Day if they purchase the Inspiron 531 Energy Star desktop, which comes equipped with power management settings to reduce CO2 emissions and is 46 percent more efficient than a standard PC.
