Novell Signs on to Climate Savers Computing Initiative

The Climate Savers Computing Initiative announced Novell (News - Alert) has joined its ranks. The initiative by Climate Savers Computing aims to reduce computer power consumption by 50 percent by 2010. Novell will work with other members of the Initiative to increase awareness and use of computer power management and increase the adoption of energy-efficient PCs and servers.

Often companies end up wasting energy due to poor power management settings. Although most of today’s PCs are capable of automatically transitioning to a sleep or hibernate state when inactive, most of them have this functionality disabled by the users. If the power is utilized properly, companies can save about 40% of power.

Novell will be committed to reducing energy consumption from a majority of its computing equipment as a member of the Climate Savers Computing Initiative (News - Alert). It will optimize existing computer systems to use power management capabilities, such as hibernation and sleep modes, purchase high-efficiency computer equipment that meets or exceeds Energy Star ratings and purchase computing equipment with increasing levels of efficiency in the coming years.

Jeff Jaffe, Novell executive Vice President and chief technology officer, said in a press release, “Addressing the needs of the environment along with our customers' needs is critical to the long-term growth of both Novell and the global economy. Novell is committed to providing better power management technologies as part of SUSE Linux Enterprise as well as working with the Climate Savers Computing Initiative to enable the reduction of power consumption across the computer industry.”

In a PC, nearly half the power never reaches the processor, memory, disks or any other computing components. The wasted electricity not only increases the cost of powering a computer, but it also is dispersed as heat. The additional heat from inefficient computers can increase the demand on air conditioners and cooling systems, which the computing equipment even more expensive to run. Even servers, which are known to be efficient than the desktops, are known to waste 30 to 40 percent of the input power.
