Sony-Ericsson Phone Declared Most Eco-Friendly
By Raju Shanbhag,
TMCnet Contributing Editor

Greenpeace has released a list of products that make an effort to be environmental friendly. The list includes phone from Sony-Ericsson, a notebook from Sony and PCs from Dell (News - Alert) and Hewlett Packard. In case you own any of these products and start celebrating, note that they scored only half of the total available marks, meaning that there is lot of scope for improvement.

The Greenpeace study "Searching for green electronics" is a snapshot of some products available on the market between August and November 2007. The group had invited the PC and phone manufacturers to come forward with their most environmental friendly products. They could be anything such as notebooks, desktop PCs, mobile phones, PDAs and game consoles. The group then analyzed the products on four criteria: use of toxic chemicals, energy efficiency, recyclability and marketing.

From the responses the group received, it appears as if all the companies were not exactly thrilled about the idea. Of the companies approached, 14 replied, providing information on 37 products. Some of the major companies like Acer, Apple, Asus, Microsoft (News - Alert), Nintendo and Sharp either did not respond or responded too late. Because of this, game consoles could not be included in the study.

After conducting the study, Greenpeace published the list to show that some companies can develop products that do less harm to the environment. The group also focused on encouraging others to do likewise. Each year, the group says there are 20 million to 50 million tons of electronic waste produced, which is posing enormous dangers to our environment.

In the study conducted, highest-scoring device was Sony-Ericsson's (News - Alert) T650i phone, with 5.30 out of 10. The other phones submitted scored between 3.6 and 4.4. Sony Vaio TZ11 scored 5.29 points out of 10 in the laptop category and other products listed scored between 3.49 and 4.82. In the desktop PCs category, Dell Optiplex 755 and the Hewlett-Packard (News - Alert) dc5750 scored the highest marks with 4.71 points each.
