Canadian Tourist Spot Uses IP Telephony for First Responders

By Johanne Torres, TMCnet Contributing Editor

VoIP application provider Cistera Networks announced today that it has completed a project that includes the deployment of the LMRConnect application engine for integrating two-way radios to an IP telephony installation in Canada.

Cistera was selected by the District of Squamish in British Columbia to provide communications between emergency responders in a tourist spot. Squamish is located between Vancouver and Whistler. The area needed a system that would allow the Emergency Operations Center to coordinate the response of ambulance, fire, public works, search and rescue teams, and police to emergencies.

The District implemented the Cistera ConvergenceServer (CCS) as the application platform. They also added the LMRConnect and Cistera's broadcasting application engine, RapidBroadcast, to their deployment of a Cisco Unified CallManager IPT system and Cisco IP Interoperability and Collaboration System (IPICS) infrastructure. With the new combined system in place, the Emergency Operations Center can now enable immediate communications between all responders.

“Adding the Cistera products for linking two-way radios to our Cisco IP phone system seemed to be the next logical step to leverage the power and flexibility of IPT,” said Garry Broeckling, CTO for the District of Squamish, in a statement. “Not only does this set-up allow us to coordinate and link radio traffic throughout the district, we have found in some cases we were able to use Cisco phones instead of adding the expensive radios in stationary sites.”

Cistera has been making strides in the VoIP industry in the Canadian market. Indeed, just earlier this month, the company announced it inked a reseller agreement which will enable Bell Canada to become the Cistera's Premier Solutions Partner (PSP) for the Canadian market. Bell Canada joins AT&T (News - Alert) and Comstor, a division of Westcon Group, Inc., as a Cistera PSP. The first deployment of Cistera's products in Canada was for Richardson Partners Financial Limited, a Canadian independent wealth management firm.
