Voice Market Not Declining as Fast as It Might Appear

"While there is a common perception that global fixed-line subscribership is in free-fall, and that consumers are abandoning fixed lines en masse in place of mobiles, the reality is not so clear-cut," TeleGeography argues.

Why You Need to Know: Like many observations about the telecommunications business, there are nuances. From 2002 to 2013, the largest 15 global service providers lost 69 percent of their former revenue per subscriber, according to the IBM Institute for Business Value.

BroadSoft Adds WebRTC, Apple iBeacon Support

This week at its annual user's conference in Arizona, BroadSoft announced support for WebRTC through its BroadSoft Labs online incubator and as a guest participant feature in its UC-One unified communications application. It is supporting Apple's iBeacon, which may lead to some interesting apps down the road.

Why You Need to Know: Like GENBAND's Kandy offering, the newly introduced BroadSoft Labs provides a variety of cloud-based services, including turnkey hosting, the BroadWorks software suite, WebRTC gateways, and PSTN gateways. The company also supplies wizards to aid in creating WebRTC-enabled applications in as little as 5 minutes, according to a company statement.

Cable News: Digital is the Lifeline as Viewership Declines

Cable news would appear to be at a crossroads: with viewership (and ad revenue) steadily declining, where is the future business model for the 24-hour news cycle? It would appear that digital offers perhaps the best way forward amid a shifting sea of changing consumption habits.

Why You Need to Know: According to the Pew Research Center, traditional cable news viewership, unsurprisingly, peaked around the 2008 presidential election. But over the past year (January-September 2014 compared with the same period in 2013), CNN's prime-time audience has declined by a full quarter, to a median viewership of 495,000, according to Nielsen Media Research data.

Top Eight Reasons Why the CSO Needs Multi-Factor Authentication

It's enough to make even the most seasoned executive dread the morning news. Is today the day that my company has been hacked? It's a rude awakening for those who lead the business. The role used to be far more straightforward: drive company growth, maintain a competitive edge and manage the success of the firm. Yet in today's business environment, executives must also be more than simply aware of their companies' data security strategies.

Why You Need to Know: If a CSO ignores the responsibility of the company secure, he or she runs a greater risk than ever before. The recent departure of Target's CEO following the highly publicized hack of the company's systems has led to wide speculation that the two events were linked.

Google Nexus Player Looks to Tackle Apple TV

The set-top box market is a rapidly growing field, and as competitors from Apple to Roku look to crack the market and slip into users' homes, one thing is increasingly clear: there are more options now than ever in terms of what can go on top of, or at least around, a user's home television set. One new option from Google is set to offer a pretty impressive array of functions and make itself, hopefully, an indispensable part of users' home life. It's the Nexus Player, and it means to take on the biggest names already in the field.

Why You Need to Know: The Nexus Player is set to offer up a voice-activated remote complete with search function, much in the same way the Amazon Fire TV system does. Additionally, the Nexus Player offers a gamepad, which allows for precise control of Android games while connected to a much larger screen than normal.
