Microsoft Goes Picture Window: One Big Windows Platform to Come

Recent word from Satya Nadella, Microsoft's recently-posted CEO, confirmed a point that some had been looking to happen almost since April, and it's a point that might just give Microsoft a real boost in the field. The new word says that Microsoft is looking to take all its versions of Windows and compress same into one big Windows platform, a move that will likely go a long way in simplifying development and proving to be a big efficiency booster for Microsoft itself.

Why You Need to Know:The Universal Windows App was designed to allow developers to develop just once, and then be able to bring the app to all the major Microsoft platforms: the major versions of Windows, Windows Phone, and even for Xbox, itself a growing part of the app ecosystem. That was a good start, certainly, but this takes things one step further by having the same version of Windows run on everything Microsoft offers up.

Cloud: 3 Abused Words That Don't Mean What You Think

The average cloud user believes that the word inherently invokes indestructability. Cloud is a safe haven where no data is ever lost. The cloud is everywhere. All clouds are somehow created equal so whether it's iCloud, Amazon, or Papa Smurf's Blue Cloud, you're sound as a pound.

Why You Need to Know: Cloud is secure, so no worries stashing all your personal pics, videos, files, personal and corporate sensitive data, and much more up there if the price is right. Those cloud guys must be doing something right because your phone, your network attached storage, laptop, and just about everything in the "Internet of Everything" is syncing non-stop to the almighty cloud.

New Survey Reveals Why Most Contact Centers Record Calls

We're all accustomed (some might say "tired") of hearing the line that "this call may be recorded for quality monitoring purposes." The disembodied voice says "may be" because many call centers record only a portion of their calls. Inevitably, those recorded calls are being used to sample the quality of employees' performance. A manager listens, critiques or praises as the case may be, and may even recommend a promotion or a raise.

Why You Need to Know: Technology today, particularly analytics, have meant that it's affordable to use those calls to extract a variety of intelligence from them. For other organizations, it's because they are required to record the calls by law. For still more, it's about protection from lawsuits.

Sprint Eyes 'Spark' LTE-A Deployment with Help from Netcracker

Sprint has agreed to a multi-year agreement that will expand its use of NetCracker's OSS solutions to support its Sprint Spark enhanced LTE rollout.

Why You Need to Know: Sprint will be a first mover in the U.S., along with AT&T, which has already started deployments. Verizon's XLTE brand is an enhancement, because it uses AWS spectrum to improve propagation characteristics and capacity, but is not true LTE-A.

Fiscal Third Quarter Results From Apple Are In

Today, Apple released the results of its second calendar quarter, which is its fiscal third quarter earnings. It seems that the iPhone is the key component that continues to make the company strong. A great number of its rivals, such as Samsung, are beginning to see a saturation point which is severely hampering sales. This does not seem to be the case with Apple.

Why You Need to Know: The third quarter results show that Apple sold 35.2 million iPhones, which represents an increase of 13 percent from the same time a year ago. Although the total was slightly below analysts' estimates who had expected to see 36 million iPhones being sold, they were not off by much.
