Alcatel Opens IP Transformation Center in Antwerp

By Johanne Torres, TMCnet Contributing Editor

French technology provider Alcatel has officially inaugurated a new IP Transformation Center (IPTC) in Antwerp, Belgium. The company opened the center to develop, integrate and test end-to-end IP networking systems for customers in Europe as well as in Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and Latin America.

The Antwerp IPTC will bring together professionals from around the world to design, test and build pre-integrated customer-specific systems as well as Alcatel (News - Alert) reference solutions. The center will host more than 50 technologies in its 1,500 square meter-sized locality. The facility will open with over 100 of Alcatel's own staff including architects, network engineers, application and OSS/BSS specialists, integration engineers, and network operation engineers. It will also include specialists from third party technology suppliers.

"The Antwerp IPTC is a major milestone in our goal to be the preferred partner for operators in their IP transformation," said Michel Rahier, president of Alcatel's fixed communications activities in a statement. "Our customers will benefit from the expertise gathered in our US IP center as well as from the experience gained from our prime involvement in large scale projects such as AT&T (News - Alert), BT, Telecom New Zealand and Telstra."

Alcatel made news last month when it announced that it was chosen by China Netcom's subsidiary Hei Longjiang Netcom to deploy a Next Generation Network (NGN) across the Hei Longjiang Province in China. The move will enable Hei Longjiang Netcom's seven million subscribers to receive multimedia telecom services including prepaid phone, color ring back tones, universal personal telecommunications (UPT), free Internet calls (Web 800), and click-to-dial.
