Remember the days when most business operations took place between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. within the premises of a single building? “Collaboration” meant making a long-distance telephone call or dropping some documents in the postal mail, or getting on an airplane to visit a partner, vendor or a customer’s offices. The idea seems quaint today. Business travel is expensive, results are expected immediately, and collaboration needs to be multimedia. This is why so much of the technology we use today is focused on real-time, multimedia collaboration.


The number of technologies that enable us to engage with each other virtually is staggering. We have Web conferencing, screen sharing, virtual meeting rooms, Web chat, document sharing, shared calendars and video calling. In fact, there are so many options available that many employees are becoming distracted by the technologies, and often give up on using them when they can’t master them immediately.

But too often, companies confuse proper deployment with simply teaching employees how to click the right buttons, Jaclyn Kostner, Ph.D., a consultant in virtual meeting management and the founder and CEO of Bridge the Distance, Inc., recently told Forbes.
