As Goes the Enterprise in Real Time Communication, So Does Microsoft
If you are waiting for a big signal to get involved with Real Time Communication (RTC) and WebRTC, it arrived on October 27 with Microsoft finally announcing it will support WebRTC within Internet Explorer and hinting it would do more than just simply offer software support in its browser. The last time IBM and Microsoft solidly lined up behind a major technology in short order was back in the mid '90s with this thing called "The Internet" and we all know how that turned out.
Skeptics might argue that Microsoft isn't fully "behind" WebRTC since it is quibbling over video standards by supporting H.264 over VP8, but let's face it, that's quibbling. Microsoft is, in its own words via blog posting, "now working to deliver the ORTC API in Internet Explorer," plugging in voice codec support for G.711, G.722, and Opus. It is also working with open standards groups such as W3C and IETF to support scalable multiparty video conferences. Read More
