About a year ago (see "The Cloud Grows Up" in the 2015 Q3 issue of Cloud Computing magazine), I talked about growth of cloud but also noted the challenges that many businesses were facing when increasing their cloud adoption. Based on results from a report by Sungard Availability Services, I noted that, "a strong majority of businesses are experiencing what Sungard calls a 'cloud hangover' - lingering challenges resulting from their migrations. In fact, three-quarters of respondents say that, despite the benefits, cloud computing has created an entirely new set of challenges."
If it's starting to look like most every industry out there is living on borrowed time, don't worry, a reason for good cheer recently emerged from the files of Gartner. If you're in the information technology (IT) industry, it might be a good time to ask for a raise, as Gartner projects spending on IT will increase 2.6 percent in 2017. That's up a good chunk from 2016, where spending actually went down a bit.
Big Data-as-a-Service (BDaas) is the next iteration of the cloud model. Leveraging several of its predecessors (SaaS, PaaS, etc.), it allows smaller businesses to become part of the Big Data revolution and leverage the information available to extract actionable intelligence to drive better products, better brands, and better businesses.
More organizations are migrating to the cloud, and for those that have to abide by regulatory compliances, hybrid cloud is the preferred choice. With hybrid deployments, there are more options for controlling and securing sensitive data to comply with regulations and protect the organization as a whole. The new Netwrix Auditor 8.5 protects user activity across hybrid cloud IT infrastructures with a 360-degree visibility for threat detection and data access governance.
Avaya, a networking software developer and telephony services provider, announced this month that it has released a new network management application for midsize and large enterprises.
Spinning up cloud services is almost as easy as grabbing food to go at your favorite burger joint. We've made fast food so convenient, affordable, and packed with calories, it's become a national problem, because our consumption doesn't match our nutritional needs or activity levels. Now imagine how much worse it would be if we had no ingredient lists, no easy way to count calories, and all of our weight gain for the month showed up in a single day.
