OutSystems PaaS Enables DoD to Expand Private Cloud Capabilities

By Kerry Doyle, Contributing Writer

As nearly every sector of the business world has identified the value-add features of the cloud, the U.S. federal government has not been far behind. In fact, today many of the legacy applications and traditional mainframes are being replaced by the newest technological innovations. This has been particularly true in the case of the U.S. Army, which has identified private cloud infrastructures and mobility as key tools in its effort to modernize and stay current with changing technological streams. In this regard, the Architecture Services Division of the Software Engineering Center, part of the Army’s Communications-Electronics Command (CECOM) has recently licensed the OutSystems Agile (News - Alert) Platform for rapid application development.

OutSystems, an established platform-as-a-service provider, has identified key areas in the federal government and related branches, such as the Department of Defense (DoD), that pose a unique challenge for its platform delivery model. By reducing its footprint and moving certain operations to private clouds, the DoD is aligning itself with imminent budget cuts to produce a leaner, more productive military operation. For example, Outsystems Agile Platform offers state-of-the-art rapid application development tools that will help the DoD create a range of new applications, effectively providing “in-house” development capacity instead of the traditional, more expensive means of outsourcing.

These applications could range from mock battle simulations to certain types of weaponry designs. The deal provides the Architecture Services Division of the Software combined with Outsystem’s Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) capabilities. Moreover, these types of adoptions enable the federal government to capitalize on the innovations and advanced technologies represented in the private sectors. According to OutSystems CEO Paulo Rosado, “…the success of the Agile Platform when faced with such a challenge shows that model-driven development can effectively scale and deliver applications to allow organizations, like the Army, to fully realize the power of the cloud.”

Cloud features, such as scalability and on-demand resource allocation, are fundamental to why an increasing number of small companies and large enterprises are incorporating the cloud into their business. For the U.S. Army and the DoD the capability to use private cloud development and incorporate its many processing, storage, and development systems within its hierarchical structure represents a significant step forward.
