Nokia Announces Flexi WiMAX Base Station
By Laura Stotler, TMCnet Contributing Editor
Nokia ( News - Alert) has announced the Flexi WiMAX Base Station, designed to minimize operating and capital expenditures for broadband wireless operators. The new product expands on Nokia’s dedication to mobile WiMAX and the company’s global experience in wireless network deployments.
The Base Station’s small and modular design will help operators optimize the costs of siting and operating WiMAX infrastructure. It features a compact, lightweight design to minimize space needed as well as power consumption and the physical effort required to install and run WiMAX networks. It uses both existing or new base station sites efficiently and can be installed indoors and outdoors without air conditioning. The product’s modularity also enables easy capacity upgrades as traffic increases.
Part of Nokia’s overall mobile WiMAX solution, the Base Station complements its existing solutions for operators in cellular radio access technologies. The overall solution features end-to-end infrastructure capabilities with radio and core network solutions in addition to a comprehensive services portfolio. The Base Station will be commercially available for the 2.5 GHz band at the end of 2007 and for the 3.5 GHz band by the first quarter of 2008. The company expects to roll out WiMAX capable mobile devices in 2008 as well.
"As the world is going wireless we believe the Nokia Flexi WiMAX Base Station offers broadband operators an easy and trusted way to offer wireless Internet connectivity to their customers anytime, anywhere," says Ari Lehtoranta, senior vice president, Radio Networks, Nokia. "Nokia is a strong believer in having a multiradio strategy that gives operators a future-proof solution and the flexibility to choose different technologies as they evolve."
