Avaya Completes Nortel Enterprise Solutions Acquisition

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

As expected, business communications systems provider Avaya today announced the successful completion of the acquisition of Nortel Enterprise Solutions, the prized division of the former stock market darling.

With this acquisition, officials at Basking Ridge, N.J.-based Avaya (News - Alert) say they’ll enhance their strategic position by offering more business communications solutions and services for enterprise customers.

Avaya also is expected to gain added scale, resources and expertise to deliver a portfolio of solutions and services throughout the world. A number of channel partners were already certified on Nortel (News - Alert) solutions. This acquisition further strengthens their value proposition in a competitive landscape.

“The completion of this acquisition represents another major step in Avaya’s evolution and growth in the communications industry,” said Kevin J. Kennedy, president and CEO of Avaya.

“Avaya and Nortel Enterprise Solutions share a common vision for the future of business communications,” he continued. “By combining our complementary technology portfolios, deep industry specific domain expertise, sales channels and customer bases, the new Avaya will redefine business communications and help customers to reduce costs, simplify operations and increase their business agility.”

With an expanded partner ecosystem, a more robust portfolio, an enhanced customer base and a greater ability to compete globally, Avaya will be able to extend relationships with system integrators and services providers who currently serve the enterprise market.

The completion of this acquisition also extends Avaya’s professional expertise as the company has gained approximately 6,000 NES employees, including 25 top managers. Previous NES President, Joel Hackney (News - Alert), has been named to the Avaya Executive Committee as senior vice president and president, Avaya Government Solutions and Data.

“In addition to great technology and outstanding customer relationships, NES brings talented employees in sales, systems engineering, services, marketing and more,” said Kennedy. “We believe our ability to innovate and develop solutions for customers to help them transform their businesses will continue to accelerate.”

Now that the NES acquisition by Avaya has been made official, plans are in place to integrate operations and customer care functions of the two companies. Avaya expects to be in a position to provide information about the combined product portfolio and roadmap within the next 30 days.

Earlier this week, Avaya announced the release of a “Lite” version of its enterprise mobility client application is now available through the Apple (News - Alert) App Store. According to company sources, one-X Mobile Lite is Avaya’s second unified communications application for enterprises that business users can download to their iPhones. With the rapid growth of mobility among professionals and consumers alike, this application is sure to drive revenue.

In November, Nortel leveraged on-demand access of the Amazon EC2. The company said the platform provides a sandbox-environment for the Nortel developer community to build “innovative” and “complementary” applications through new technologies such as Web services.

Now that Nortel is an asset of Avaya, the resulting company will be able to extend significant value to the end client, as well as creating a number of opportunities within the industry for channel partners and other vendors.
