Qwest Ethernet Enables Distance Learning for Central New Mexico Community College

By Jyothi Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Central New Mexico Community College (CNM) has announced that its four campuses and workforce training center in Albuquerque are now connected by Qwest’s high-speed Metro Optical Ethernet data networking platform. The recent upgrade is helping the community college to successfully integrate technology into distance-learning programs and reach remote students.

CNM has one of the largest distance-learning programs in the United States and with the current upgrade, its able to achieve broadband speeds up to 100 megabits per second at each site. Ethernet provides the capacity to deliver bandwidth-intensive learning opportunities to classrooms and online.

Joe Gieri, executive director, Information Technology Services, CNM, said in a recent interview that, CNM is nationally recognized for its innovation and ability to serve traditional and non-traditional students. And today, more than ever, both groups are asking for distance-learning options. He said that, by implementing Qwest’s (News - Alert) Ethernet solution, college has found a way to balance student body’s needs and the budget.

The Qwest-designed solution offers low-cost, scalable and secure bandwidth that leverages the power of Ethernet and optical technologies across metro area networks. Ethernet provides local area network (LAN-to-LAN) connectivity between two or more customer locations within a metro area and is suitable for a wide variety of applications. These applications include data file transfer, internet access and access to hosting, outsourced mail and file server services.

“Schools nationwide are using technology as an affordable way to broaden their scope, creating educational opportunities both in the classroom and online. This trend toward distance learning is likely to accelerate as our country’s leadership places more emphasis on helping maximize Americans’ educational potential through technology,” said Teresa Taylor, executive vice president, Qwest Business Markets Group.

According to the officials at Qwest, company’s Metro Optical Ethernet has the capacity to support the technology needs of the college for years to come. CNM is building a sixth campus in the community of Rio Rancho near Albuquerque. The new campus, scheduled to open in 2010, will also be connected through the Ethernet platform.
