Bernalillo County Deploys DiVitas Mobile UC to Increase Employee EfficiencyBy Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributing Editor Mobile Unified Communications (News - Alert) (UC) have been popular among larger enterprises. The ability of mobile UC to lower operational costs and improve employee efficiency encourages many private companies as well as public organizations to adopt this technology for cost-effective management of their workforce in tough economic conditions.
Bernalillo County, the most populated county in the state of New Mexico, is now following the paths of high-tech firms to employ the benefits of mobile UC among its 500 mobile staff working in the field as well as on the campus. DiVitas Networks, a California-based mobile UC provider, is helping the county to achieve their goals.
The DiVitas Mobile UC solution extends the deskphone by duplicating its functionality on a dual mode smartphone such as Nokia (News - Alert) Eseries and Nseries and Windows Mobile, the company said. DiVitas Client supports the complete range of business communication applications including voicemail, contacts, instant messenger (IM) and Presence.
Bernalillo County runs Mobile UC on a Cisco Wireless LAN (WLAN) and the Cisco Call Manager PBX (News - Alert). To run the DiVitas Client, the county selected Nokia’s E71 Eseries smartphones. Along with this, the County also runs the SAP Mobile Assets Management (MAM) application on their Nokia phones.
The DiVitas Mobile UC solution operates over Wi-Fi and cellular networks. The Wi-Fi capability increases coverage and helps reduce cellular expenses. Through a single number reach, DiVitas allows the county team to contact each other by their four-digit deskphone extension no matter where they are located.
The microblog feature on the DiVitas Presence screen offers maximum visibility to employees by displaying the location and status of each employee instantly, allowing them to contact each other simultaneously, making communication and collaboration more effective.
“In these tough economic times and revenue shortfalls affecting the private and pubic sectors, a solution that offers significant financial benefits was absolutely a priority,” said Paul Roybal, chief information officer for Bernalillo County, in a statement. “We needed to mobilize more of our staff while lowering our communications costs. We selected DiVitas because it allowed us to do both.”
In order to use the DiVitas solution on Nokia Eseries dual mode phones, Bernalillo County also switched from their longtime Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) cellular provider and picked T-Mobile (News - Alert). Nokia Eseries dual mode phones are not supported by CDMA service providers.
