Freescale Deploys CEVA Pro Communications Product Line

By Jai C.S., TMCnet Contributing Editor

Freescale Semiconductor, a company specializing in the design and manufacture of embedded semiconductors, has signed a licensing agreement with CEVA, a licensor of silicon intellectual property (SIP) platform solutions and DSP cores for mobile handsets, consumer electronics and storage applications, for deploying CEVA's (News - Alert) latest generation Enterprise Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) Intellectual Property (IP).

CEVA’s IP portfolio includes comprehensive solutions for multimedia, audio, voice over packet (VoP), Bluetooth and Serial ATA (SATA), and a wide range of programmable DSP cores and subsystems.

By leveraging CEVA’s several years of experience in Serial ATA technology, the Advanced Enterprise Serial ATA IP provides high performance, high bandwidth storage connectivity for Small Office/Home Office applications. Freescale will be deploying this within its product line, including their MPC8315E PowerQUICC II Pro Communications Processor (News - Alert) family.

"CEVA's Enterprise Serial ATA Controller and PHY helps Freescale deliver world class products featuring silicon-proven, high performance SATA interfaces," said Nikolay Guenov, portfolio manager of Networking and Multimedia Group at Freescale Semiconductor (News - Alert).

"Our PowerQUICC II Pro MPC8315E processor with integrated SATA positions Freescale well for success in residential/SOHO markets," added Guenov.

The MPC8315E communications processor series delivers a wide range of feature-rich applications that make the digital home experience easier, richer and safer. The cost-effective MPC8315E processor meets the requirements of several small office/home office (SOHO) applications including consumer network attached storage (NAS), digital media server, residential gateway, WLAN access point, printing, and industrial control.

With Native Command Queuing (NCQ), CEVA's advanced Enterprise SATA solution can substantially reduce software overhead in Freescale's communications processors and also deliver the high-performance levels essential for high bandwidth SOHO applications.

"Today, the SOHO and consumer storage markets are experiencing rapid growth and Freescale's PowerQUICC II Pro family of processors are at the leading edge in terms of performance, features and configurability," said Paddy McWilliams, product marketing director, Communications Division at CEVA.

"By integrating our mature and silicon proven SATA PHY and Controller technologies into their PowerQUICC II Pro product line, Freescale offers high-performance, network-enabled media distribution and storage functionality in a highly-integrated, affordable product for these burgeoning markets," said McWilliams.
