Oracle Releases Communications Converged Application ServerBy Anshu Shrivastava, TMCnet Contributing Editor Oracle (News - Alert) has announced the availability of Oracle Communications Converged Application Server 4.0, which was earlier called BEA WebLogic SIP Server.
This updated version, according to the company, enables network operators, network equipment providers (NEP), systems integrators and independent software vendors (ISVs) to develop, deliver, and operate multimedia communications services.
A key component of the recently released Oracle Communications Service Delivery product portfolio, this latest offering, is a converged Web/communications application development and deployment platform.
For next-generation service delivery platforms (SDPs), according to company officials, it combines Internet and communications capabilities with the carrier-grade scalability necessary to deliver service creation and execution environment.
The Oracle server is the first commercial session initiation protocol (SIP)/IP-multimedia subsystem (IMS) application compliant with the Java specification request (JSR) 289 standard. The company has led the Java industry's development of the latest SIP Servlet 1.1 specification, JSR 289, through the Java community process (JCP).
Officials said that the JSR 289 introduces a new application router that enables application developers to create services that converge with Web-based communications applications into end-user services, spanning existing business and operations support systems (BSS/OSS).
Oracle Communications Converged Application Server provides “high levels” of availability and reliability through clustering, replication and geographic redundancy. Officials said this enables service providers to eliminate single points of failure if there is catastrophic failure in one or more nodes in their telecommunications networks.
Also, this server delivers an integrated, converged application platform with support for SIP Servlet (JSR 289), Java Enterprise Edition (Java EE 5), service-oriented architecture (SOA), Web services and IMS standards.
Moreover, this Oracle service leverages real-time Java Virtual Machine (JVM) in Oracle JRockit, and subscriber data management in Oracle coherence, to deliver low latency necessary for converged services such as voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) communications or IMS-enabled Web 2.0 applications.
Oracle Communications Converged Application Server also features a comprehensive, Eclipse platform- and Java-based service creation environment.
“This release is a key milestone in our strategy to deliver a world-class portfolio of service delivery products to the communications industry,” said Liam Maxwell, vice president of products at Oracle Communications, in a statement.
