The University of New Mexico (UNM) is reportedly upgrading its campus-wide communications network with NEC’s (
News -
Alert) UC for Enterprise suite of advanced unified communications (UC) applications, as well as NEC’s revolutionary modular IP

terminals.
As per the agreement, NEC will deploy the UNIVERGE UC700 desktop client, the UNIVERGE MC530 mobile client, and the UNIVERGE DT300 and DT700 series IP terminals. The UNIVERGE MA4000 management console that is already in use will be upgraded with an administration package that will allow end users to control their phone settings from their Web browsers.
“Our goal in deploying IP and application-based communications is not only long-term investment protection, but also building on our NEC infrastructure to make communications on campus more intuitive and convenient through cutting-edge productivity applications, such as NEC’s UC for Enterprise,” said Mark Reynolds, associate director for ITS Communications Network Services (CNS) at UNM, in a
statement. “With the assistance and expertise of NEC, this deployment is helping us understand how UC can improve business communications, work efficiency and information availability among executive users at our university.”
Don Fiorentino, vice president and general manager of western regional sales for NEC Unified Solutions, said UNM has moved from pure digital telephony to a mixed IP communications environment in a few short years and is now deploying UC applications that can truly help them improve communications flexibility on campus over the long term. He added that by giving employees single-number access, presence-based call routing

and calendar integration, the University and NEC are enabling them to more efficiently manage their own communications and busy work schedules.
NEC’s UC for Enterprise suite is being installed in conjunction with a new UNIVERGE SV7000 IP communications server connected to the university’s two existing UNIVERGE NEAX 2400 IPXs via NEC’s FUSION Call Control Signaling (FCCS) solution. This enables all IP-PBXs inside the university to function as single number equipment.
In 2006, UNM started implementing its customized NEC IP communications solution supporting 22,000 voice terminals (IP, TDM

and analog) ports on-campus.
