Global Connectivity is Here to Stay: Ingate Systems Exec

By Beecher Tuttle, TMCnet Contributor

Each year, a growing number of enterprises and SMBs ditch their legacy phone systems and replace them with IP-based technologies, which can offer a wide variety of Unified Communications (News - Alert) applications, including video, voice, instant messaging and other collaborative tools.

To get an expert's perspective on the ever-expanding Unified Communications market, TMC CEO Rich Tehrani recently caught up with Steve Johnson (News - Alert), president of Ingate Systems, a Stockholm, Sweden-based manufacturer of data communications products for UC technologies. Johnson offered his thoughts on the future of Ingate's industry as well as some other major trends in the global communications space.

The biggest winner in 2010, according to Johnson, was Apple (News - Alert). The California-based tech giant dominated the consumer market and made serious headway in the SMB and enterprise markets as well. He believes that Apple and Android will be the two major movers in 2011. Global connectivity is here to stay, said Johnson, and the key players in the mobile market will be the main beneficiaries.

Toward the end of their talk, Tehrani and Johnson touched on Ingate's upcoming role at ITEXPO East 2011, where the company will be educating attendees on recent advances in UC, SIP trunking, HD video and many other topics. Johnson also previewed his company's half-day workshop for service providers, which will take place on Feb. 1, one day before ITEXPO East 2011 officially kicks off. Attendees can catch with Johnson and the rest of Ingate's team at ROOM A208 at the Miami Beach Convention Center on Feb. 2-4.

The complete interview can be found below.

Rich Tehrani: What was the most significant technology trend in 2010 and what impact will it have in 2011?

Steve Johnson: Apple’s dominance in the consumer market will continue to drive business adoption of new technologies, including Unified Communications applications. Video is a big part of this – and will form the backbone for UC adoption in 2011. SIP trunking has absolutely set the stage for the new wave of Unified Communications use, and I think in 2011 we’ll see that taking hold.

RT: Who will be the mobile winners in 2011 out of Google Android, Apple, Microsoft, Nokia and RIM?

SJ: Apple and Android have taken center stage, but our opinion is that Apple is going to continue to wow the market. However, Microsoft is not to be counted out.

RT: Are tablets really the future?

SJ: Global connectivity – true anywhere/anytime accessibility and Internet access – is here to stay. It has become a part of our culture and will only become more important. Hand-in-hand with global connectivity is mobility, and as long as processing power and speed keep up with user demands and expectations then yes, tablets are going to me more important than ever.

RT: The FCC (News - Alert) has recently voted to support net neutrality.  Is net neutrality necessary, or will it present more challenges than it will solve?

SJ: Net neutrality is absolutely essential to unfettered access to information for all types of applications, mobile and otherwise. If we’re going to progress in the communications revolution there has to be some kind of net neutrality in place.

RT: Why have you chosen to exhibit at ITEXPO East in Miami?

SJ: The ITEXPO continues to be the leading conference for VoIP, SIP and Unified Communications. Consistently we’ve seen an increasing number of attendees to our SIP Trunk-Unified Communications Summit, free educational seminars on the what, why and how of SIP trunking and Unified Communications.

RT: What is the most important reason attendees should visit your booth at ITEXPO

SJ: SIP trunking and Unified Communications help enterprises streamline productivity and cut costs while achieving fast ROI. For service providers, they are a means of generating new revenue streams and increasing market share. VARs, enterprises and service providers can get the facts about SIP trunking and UC – from the industry’s leading experts – at our free seminars.

RT: What new and exciting products/solutions can we expect to see from your company in 2011?

SJ: This season we’re debuting a new half-day workshop for service providers – on February 1, one day before the ITEXPO opens – to showcase how this audience can maximize revenue and minimize deployment costs with SIP trunking and UC.

Sessions will cover:

- Generating Revenue from HD Video
- Interoperability: The Key to Service Revenue Growth
- Delivering SIP to the Enterprise
- The Value of a Service Provider Demarcation Point
- Security

New SIP Trunk-UC Summit sessions on Feb. 2-4 will include discussions on SIP Trunking in Latin America and Europe, Fax-over-IP, Unifying the Distributed Workforce, case studies and more. Town Hall Meetings on Security as well as Unified Communications.

Presenters will include Aastra, Broadvox, ShoreTel and many others — including VOIPSA, EarthLink Business, UCIF, Commetrex, FaxCore, Maloff NetResults, Bandwidth.com, SIP Forum, Unwired Revolution, Market Strategy & Analytics Partners and Intertex Data AB. All sessions will be moderated by Joel Maloff (News - Alert), principal consultant, Maloff NetResults.
