Cloud Computing Developments from CA Technologies at the ITEXPO West

By Juliana Kenny, TMCnet Web Editor

Amongst all the bustling events and sessions at the ITEXPO (News - Alert) West 2010, I was fortunate enough to be able to sit in and hear Adam Famularo, general manager of the cloud computing solutions unit at CA Technologies speak about “market turbulence” and how CA (News - Alert) is developing unique approaches to the problems facing IT with the movement of cloud computing.

Famularo noted that with the number of cloud computing choices available, the complexity of the IT environment is growing, and that is where CA comes in. “We are taking the knowledge that we know and taking the technology and bringing it over into coud-based environments,” said Famularo. CA recently added virtualization products and bought Hyperformix to help manage the growing portfolio.

CA has since bought 3Tera and launched 3Tera AppLogic, which enables its products to be SaaS (News - Alert). “We’ve spent over a billion dollars in the cloud space this year,” stated Famularo. The CA 3Tera AppLogic “creates an application-centric cloud” with the following features:

-It creates a cloud computing environment from commodity servers.

-It packages services and infrastructure as single objects.

-IT integrates the two – the apps and the cloud.

Announcing at the keynote the released version of 3Tera AppLogic 2.9, Famularo revealed a free trial opportunity for MSPs available on CA’s website. In a cleverly hand-drawn depiction of how the cloud computing process works, he highlighted the benefits of 3Tera AppLogic for MSPs. For MSPs, CA’s new product allows them to address new markets quickly, and increase efficiency including agility and control, amongst other advantages.

For customers of MSPs, that means a faster market response, a pay as you go model, more secure delivery, and self service features.

Striving to sign on a total of 300 MSPs by the end of 2010 (currently at 50), CA already has the backing of several companies. Todd Abrams, president, Layered Tech said “by using 3Tera we got ROI within 6 months.” There are certainly several exciting developments in store for MSPs with CA’s announcement. The cloud computing industry will undoubtedly feel the change!
