Dark Fiber & U.S. Stimulus - How New Fiber Drives Broadband VoIPBy Marisa Torrieri, TMCnet Editor Everyone in telecom is a buzz about Broadband Technologies Opportunity Program.
But exactly how will wide-scale broadband deployment spur the VoIP industry’s growth over the next five years?
Allied Fiber CEO Hunter Newby (News - Alert) - whose Manhattan-based company is working to pave the way for wide broadband access, wireless backhaul and lower latency through next-generation long haul dark fiber construction - sheds some light on this question at his ITEXPO West 2009 panel, “How New Fiber Drives Broadband VoIP,” on Tuesday, at 12:45 p.m.
Newby will give ITEXPO (News - Alert)-goers an overview of the current status of the ARRA BTOP, and valuable insight on the opportunities that come from wide-scale broadband deployment.
“By putting high-count dark fiber in place with integrated cell towers and colocation facilities between undersea cable landing stations touching the Atlantic, Pacific and Caribbean we will make this country a much smaller place from a network-geography perspective,” Newby told TMC (News - Alert) President Rich Tehrani in a pre-show interview. “Buyers will very easily be able to get on, around and out to where they need to go in a cost effective and predictable manner much like they do in parts of Asia and Western Europe.”
Newby will be joined by John R. Savageau, chief technology officer for Pacific-Tier Communications, and Eric Bender, president of Wilshire Connection LLC., for the follow-up session “Fiber & Wireless Backhaul – Two Technologies That Actually Feed Each Other” immediately afterward.
Representatives from fiber/wireless carriers and VoIP carriers to VoIP/transport hardware vendors will benefit from both sessions. According to Newby, “wireless and fiber are actually complimentary and not polar opposites as many have believed, or were made to believe.” Follow ITEXPO on Twitter: twitter.com/itexpo Marisa Torrieri is a TMCnet Editor.
