SIP Trunks Emerge as Attractive Options in Slow Economy: Sipera

By Kelly McGuire, TMCnet Editor

While the economic crisis continues to weigh heavily on many businesses, the vice president of marketing at Sipera Systems, Adam Boone, told TMC CEO Rich Tehrani (News - Alert) this week that secure VoIP and Unified Communications have emerged as attractive assets during these current times.

“The economic crisis has underscored for us that any technology that enables greater enterprise process efficiencies actually is relatively recession proof,” Boone told Tehrani in an interview, printed in full below.

With many Sipera customers deploying the company’s Unified Communications (News - Alert) security appliance to provide termination and application layer security for SIP trunks, because of the savings on telecom costs that SIP trunks provide, customers are gaining the competitive advantage while reducing overall costs, according to Boone.

In addition, Boone said the company’s customers are deploying Sipera’s (News - Alert) security appliance to create distributed call centers. It connects VoIP calls with complete security and privacy, eliminating the violation of privacy rights and regulations, while competing with business leaders in the industry and staying budget-friendly.

Lowering spending allocated to driving business growth, while always beneficial, is crucial during a recession.

Boone – who is hosting the Unified Communications security workshop at the ITEXPO, to be held Sept. 1 to 3 in Los Angeles – added that his company’s customers are quickly learning that using Sipera solutions yields strong ROI in VoIP and UC.

Rich Tehrani: What has the economic crisis taught you, and how has it changed your customers?

Adam Boone (News - Alert) (News - Alert) (pictured left): Our solutions enable customers to quickly and easily address the security requirements for transforming unified communications. The economic crisis has underscored for us that any technology that enables greater enterprise process efficiencies actually is relatively recession proof. For example, many customers are deploying our UC security appliance to provide termination and application layer security for SIP trunks, because of the savings on telecom costs that SIP trunks provide. Further, enterprises are deploying our security appliance to enable distributed call centers, which can give them tremendous competitive advantages and cost savings.

A distributed call center means that the call center representative can be anywhere in the world, and a VoIP call can be connect to them with complete security and privacy. This means you can perform proficiency-based call routing – sending calls to a subject matter expert no matter where they are – without violating privacy regulations or requirement.

Furthermore, you can gain a great cost advantage by using public networks, the Internet, to provide this connectivity, without risking security. Bottom line, our customers are gaining competitive advantages while at the same time reducing their overall cost structures. This is naturally attractive in any economic environment, but during the recession, we have found that the cost savings side of the equation often drives the business case.

RT: I understand you are speaking during ITEXPO West, to be held Sept. 1 to 3 in Los Angeles. Describe your talk and tell us what companies or people should attend.

AB: I am hosting the Unified Communications security workshop at IT Expo on Sep. 2 and we will be delving into a range of hot button issues that can make or break an enterprise’s VoIP and UC deployments. We will focus on how to extend your VoIP to employees outside the enterprise DMZ without violating security policies or privacy mandates. We’ll discuss how to deploy secure SIP trunks to reduce telecom costs while ensuring that you are protected against threats.

One of our speakers will address the issues around toll fraud in the VoIP context and how to protect your enterprise from falling victim to this rising crime. The workshop also will explore VoIP and Unified Communications in business continuity communications and pandemic planning. Lastly, the security consulting experts at the VIPER Lab will spotlight the latest in VoIP and UC security self-assessment tools that any IT manager can use to test their own security architecture.

RT: Why should customers choose your company’s solutions? How do they justify the expense to management?

AB: Our solutions help customers to unlock new modes of interaction among their employees, buyers, channel partners and their supply chain, including users outside the classic enterprise DMZ. With these capabilities in place, our customers are able to communicate more effectively and securely with any of these audiences with complete confidence that mission critical communications are fully secure.

Our customers have quickly learned that using our solutions enables them to extract the greatest return out of their investment in VoIP and UC, and they have established teleworker programs, distributed virtual call centers, robust collaboration environments with the supply chain that reduces travel costs, and many other innovations. Justifying this investment to management is a simple matter because the business case includes both dramatic enhancements to enterprise productivity and significant reductions in cost.
