Smart Grid is a Global Trend

By Jon Arnold, Principal, J Arnold & Associates

It’s very easy to just think about Smart Grid in U.S. terms, especially with so much stimulus funding to accelerate infrastructure modernization. As with IP communications, this trend is global, and utilities everywhere are racing down this path. We may not hear much about what goes on elsewhere, but Smart Grid is very real for utilities of all shapes and sizes.

Our inaugural Smart Grid Summit is pretty U.S.-centric, but that’s more for practical reasons than geographic myopia. Leading up to the next Summit in January, we’ll have more time to engage with Smart Grid players from other markets. Being based in Canada, Shidan and I have managed to bring a few local speakers to the Summit, and for January we know there will be many others.

This portal is attracting international attention, and we will be actively looking to attract speakers, exhibitors and attendees from outside North America for the next Summit.
On that note, I wanted to share the highlights of a White Paper (News - Alert) that just came our way. It was published in July 2009 by the ROA Group – Research on Asia – and looks at the current state of Smart Grid in the U.S., E.U. and South Korea. Being a White Paper, it’s pretty high level, but here are the key takeaways:

·         To begin, there’s a brief overview of what Smart Grid means, and a comparison table showing how various aspects of the energy grid are addressed in the conventional mode as well as with Smart Grid.
·         For the U.S., there’s a nice summary of the major vendors focused on Intelligrid and a roadmap for key Intelligrid milestones through to 2030.
·         For the E.U. and South Korea, there’s a short review of current initiatives. There’s not much analysis, but the paper provides some useful starting points for further research.

Being a White Paper, there is not much detail, but it is based on more extensive research, which was conducted in Korean. I haven’t seen that, but you’re welcome to follow up with ROA for further analysis. The paper can be downloaded for free for registered users at ROA’s Web site, and if you’re not, we plan to post it shortly to the White Paper section of the portal. Failing that, drop us a line, and we can get you a soft copy.
