Open Source Call Recording: Compliance, Performance and Risk

Bruno Haas is co-founder and chief technology officer for OrecX. Haas will be speaking at the upcoming Astricon where he will present the session Voice Recording Challenges.
 
Prior to co-founding OrecX, Haas successively worked as a software architect in electronic warfare, high capacity optical switches and advanced speech processing systems at Thales (News - Alert), Nortel and Autonomy Systems.
 
I had the chance to ask him several question in advance of his company’s participation at Astricon.
 
 
GG: You are on the schedule to speak at the upcoming Astricon. What can conference goers expect to hear in your session?
BH: Our primary objective is to help educate Astricon attendees about voice recording. There are three reasons people record phone calls – compliance, performance, and risk. Traditionally voice recording has been an expensive application that costs close to $1,000 per phone line, based on proprietary software and hardware and most importantly takes a great deal of time to implement and educate the end users. These issues made voice recording prohibitive to most businesses. OrecX / Asterisk (News - Alert) users can be up and running within and hour at a fraction of the cost of most voice recording solutions.
 
GG: Are you planning any new announcements at the event?
BH: We have a few new features and solutions that we will talk about
 
GG: Where does your company fit in the current world of open source communications?
BH: We are the only open source voice recording solution on the market as of today. This allows our customers to choose between our free open source version and our commercial version; over 33,000 people have downloaded our GPL version.
 
GG: What are the most important criteria organizations need consider when migrating to open source?
BH: The most important criteria organizations need consider when migrating to open source is planning. What is the objective of the organization and what are their core competencies. Open source solutions allow organizations choice and cost reductions. So if the organization is committed to customizing their organization around their customers or processes then open source solutions can make a major impact both on the bottom line and in customer interactions.
 
GG: How would you define the value of Asterisk-based solutions to those organizations that have yet to adopt it?
BH: The core value-add is choose and cost. Asterisk enables organizations to customize their PBX (News - Alert) and applications in a non-proprietary manner, which in the long run saves money.
