GENBAND to Spin Out Taqua Business

By Susan J. Campbell, TMCnet Contributing Editor

As acquisitions and mergers continue to dominate the activity in the telecommunications industry, the news of an acquisition that actually focuses on enhancing the business operations of the acquired division or company seems like a breath of fresh air.

GENBAND (News - Alert) Inc., a developer of next-generation IP gateways and application solutions, has announced the signing and closing of a definitive agreement with the leadership team responsible for managing the T7000 product family at GENBAND, formally Tekelec (News - Alert).

GENBAND acquired the Tekelec 7000 product line, formally Taqua, as part of the recent acquisition of the Tekelec’s Switching Solutions Group. GENBAND is spinning out the T7000 business to the new Taqua (News - Alert) in an effort to provide the optimum long-term sales, marketing, R&D and support to existing and prospective T7000 customers. Numerous members of the new management, as well as employees, have been affiliated with Taqua since its inception in 1999.

“We are confident that the Taqua management team and its employees have the sufficient depth to effectively operate and grow the Taqua business, which has been our primary focus for this transaction,” said Charles Vogt, president and CEO of GENBAND, in a Monday statement.

Taqua was founded in 1998 and developed the industry’s first fully integrated next-generation Class 5 switch – the Taqua 7000 Switching System (T7000). The T7000 is designed to enable lower switching deployment and operational costs, while also delivering new services.

Based on a “switch-on-a-card” design, the T7000 has over 250 deployments at incumbent and competitive carriers in North America. The T7000 interface card performs all of the functions required of a Class 4/5 switch, thereby significantly increasing reliability and simplifying implementation.

Supporting a wide variety of protocols, including SS7, SIP, MGCP, GR-303, CAS, NCS, PRI and others over line, trunk or IP interfaces, the T7000 can be used in Enhanced VoIP, Intelligent Gateway (News - Alert), Class 4/5 Transition, Triple Play and/or Cable Telephony applications.

GENBAND is a supplier of next generation IP gateway and application solutions. Promoting high-performance gateway and application platforms, the company can enable wired, wireless and cable network service providers to rapidly deploy new multimedia services.

Taqua will be able to respond to a growing demand by offering service providers the ability to lower switching and operational costs, while also delivering new services. Considering the T7000 can increase reliability, simplify implementation and supports a wide variety of protocols, the demand for the solution is likely to be significant, which will in effect make the spin out of Taqua extremely successful.
