Verizon Announces SIP Trunking What is SIP Trunking

The tutorial is available at:

The key benefits of SIP to the small or large enterprise are profound. For the small enterprise, interconnection of individual offices with other providers, channel partners or home office workers reduces local trunk charges. For the large enterprise, reducing CAPEX-Capital expenditures on a multiple network gateways located through the world is also significant. That is, using provider/carrier gateways reduces corporate capital and operational costs. Depending on the VoIP CODEC select, up to eight times the numbers of calls can be processed over a network with SIP trunking than with traditional TDM connections. According to Verizon, there are codecs that could enable 8:1 but as a service provider entity selling business class us voip we dont go over 2:1. There are other savings on carrier "per-minute" connections to local or long distance network (which may depend on PUC approval).

Shown in the animation is an example of an Enterprise SIP Proxy server is connected to a Carrier Proxy server and the call is processed without connection to the PSTN. Since SIP is an application layer protocol, SIP trunks can be connected via any Layer 2 protocol such as ATM, Frame, Ethernet, wireless or pure IP networks. With SIP, the intelligence for call setup and features resides on the SIP device or UA-User Agent, such as an IP phone or a PC with voice or IM-Instant-Messaging software. In other words, carriers/providers will offer SIP trunking as a mean for both gateways to PSTN and connection to other SIP networks.
