Sling Media Launches SlingPlayer Mobile Application for Apple Products in Europe

By Kelly McGuire, TMCnet Editor

Sling Media, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of EchoStar Corporation, announced the release of the SlingPlayer mobile WiFi application for Apple’s (News - Alert) iPhone and iPod touch customers across Europe.

While Apple has yet to approve the 3G version of the SlingPlayer mobile application for the iPhone (News - Alert) and iPod, the WiFi version is now available in 16 additional countries including France, Germany, Spain and Italy.

The application was first made available to iPhone and iPod touch customers in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom in May 2009.

According to the company, the Sling iPhone application is 17th in popularity in the Apple store.

In order to use the WiFi (News - Alert) version, your iPhone or iPod touch must be connected to a Wi-Fi network. Once a connection is established, the SlingPlayer mobile software application connects to a users Slingbox SOLO or PRO at home, which allows a user to watch, and control, their home TV.

While using this system, users can change their TV channels, control your digital video recorder, or “DVR” and watch your favorite shows, all in one remote location.

“Making Sling’s technology available for the mobile market means that users can now have “TV Everywhere” on the three screens: TV, computer and smartphone,” company officials said.

The application also works on BlackBerry (News - Alert) mobiles.

John Gilmore, senior vice president and general manager of Sling Media said that despite the disappointment in regards to the lack of approval for the 3G version, the company is happy to launch the WiFi version.

"It gives our European customers access to the full spectrum of viewing choices on their iPhone or iPod touch when connected to a WiFi network – the ability to watch and control both their live TV from home as well as their home DVR,” said Gilmore.

Pricing throughout the country varies, but the system is affordable in any location.

“The telecos and cable companies make the TV Everywhere promise to their customers, but Sling delivers that promise today,” company officials said.
