The Top WAN Optimization as a Service Stories of 2010

By Erin Monda, TMCnet Contributor

It’s been an exciting year in the world of WAN optimization as a service and I’ve decided to review some of the more prolific news stories from the channel.

Back on May, 04, 2010, Expand Networks (News - Alert) launched their sponsorship of the WAN Optimization as a Service Channel here at TMC.

Shortly after the channel’s launch, Ampacet Corporation’s IT managers decided to invest in a web-based ERP system, which meant servers in the headquarters in New York and Luxembourg had to be consolidated. With a global IT infrastructure, WAN traffic increased and Ampacet started to centralize by implementing Citrix in 2001. The company also found it necessary to make use of one Active Directory domain while facing difficulties in managing Citrix with 13 NT domains.

In other news, an industry journal wrote that the advent of information technology has caused "a paradigm shift in the way businesses operate and majorly IT-based business goals are set." And that includes WAN optimization as a service. The journal went on to explain that the Internet (i.e. Wide Area Networking) "has transformed the enterprise market with diverse technologies that enable quick and secure data transmissions over the network."

NetEx (News - Alert), a provider of in WAN optimization as a service software, announced the additional of Melbourne-based Techplus Distribution as the distributor for its HyperIP WAN optimization as a service software in Australia and New Zealand. Techplus, a value added distributor in Australia, specializes in bandwidth management and with a focus on products providing quality of service, wide area file services and WAN optimization, the company said.

And lastly, in a white paper released in Sept., Alastair Salmon, technical projects manager for international operations at Christian Aid, said “Connectivity is the single most taxing IT issue in almost all our country offices. Anything which helps to make best use of the available bandwidth helps to ensure our teams are able to complete their aid work more efficiently, while simultaneously making maximum use of our existing network investments.”

Erin Monda recently graduated from W.C.S.U. with a degree in professional writing. She primarily writes about network technologies, including cloud computing, virtualization and network optimization, however she also has a focus on E911 technologies and legislation.
