Nortel Provides Carrier Solutions to Expand du's Next Generation Network

By Rajani Baburajan, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Integrated telecom service provider du is planning to expand its next generation network (NGN) to deliver “anytime, anywhere” IP Centrex and multimedia services across a wider geographical location with the help of carrier solutions from Nortel (News - Alert), the company said.

Nortel provides its Communication Server 2000 IP multimedia softswitch and Nortel Media Gateway (News - Alert) 15000 to enable du to respond to the growing demand from business and residential customers in Dubai and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

The main focus of du in the region is to offer converged landline, broadband and TV services. Converged media and telecommunications solutions have become important trend in many developed markets in the world, changing the way people communicate, view entertainment programs and manage their day-to-day lives. By converging different services into one, customers get the benefit of single monthly bill and a common point of contact for all services.

du's success with its initial suite of converged media and telecommunications services has created a demand for capacity, quality, speed and new services, says Osman Sultan, chief executive officer, du. The latest network upgrade addresses these issues.

Through the expanded network, du plans to deliver new communications services such as Unified Communications (News - Alert) (UC) and Internet Protocol (IP) powered business services such as presence, collaboration and fixed mobile convergence based on Session Initiation Protocol (News - Alert) (SIP) technology.

Nortel also provides its Global Services portfolio, which include building and operating the system and knowledge transfer, to du network. The network will ensure complete security and have full redundancy to ensure that services run without interruption.

“Furthermore, the strategic location of UAE, situated as it is between Europe and the emerging markets in Asia, has reinvented Dubai as a world communications gateway and a conduit to markets in the Middle East,” said Sultan. “This location and the burgeoning financial success of the UAE have created major growth in international carrier voice traffic.”

“The Middle East region and du are of primary importance for Nortel,” said Ramin Attari, vice president, Nortel Middle East, in a statement. “With this new success Nortel is increasing leadership in the NGN 2.0 domain for carrier voice and multimedia applications serving business and consumers.”
