New Ingate CEO Anders Eriksson Discusses Future of IP Communications, SIP

By Mae Kowalke, TMCnet Senior Editor

Companies that sell new, cutting-edge products and services always face somewhat of an uphill battle because they must educate customers about the benefits of what’s being offered. Being an early entrant to a developing market presents challenges, but also opportunities. Customers might not understand all the benefits of new solutions, but then again neither do potential competitors.

When helping to shape the future development of a new industry, it helps for a company to have someone with related experience and a creative vision at the helm. One company that falls into this category is Ingate, a provider of security solutions for Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)-based communications. The company was founded in 2001 as a spin-off of Cendio Systems AB and Intertex (News - Alert) Data AB, and today its products include SIP firewalls, NAT traversal products and virtual private network (VPN) solutions, as well as modules for security, QoS, SIP registrar, remote connectivity, VoIP survival and SIP trunking.

Earlier this month, Ingate announced a new CEO: Anders Eriksson, who has 15 years of experience in the IP communications industry, including stints at Siemens (News - Alert), Newbridge Networks and Alcatel. Most recently, he spent five years heading up Zitius Service Delivery AB, a Sweden-based broadband operator he founded in 2003.

Rich Tehrani caught up with Eriksson to find out more about his background, his perspective on the IP communications industry, and his vision for Ingate’s future. Eriksson spoke first about his experience running Zitius, where he learned a lot while partnering with Internet service providers (ISPs), Internet telephony service providers (ITSPs) and TV service providers. Based on that experience, and other roles he’s held over the years in the IP communications space, Eriksson predicts a bright future for the industry.

“I think we will see, over the next five to seven years, a massive increase in Internet and Internet telephony traffic,” Eriksson said. “We will see traffic growth of 50 to 100 percent per year.”

As Ingate’s new CEO, Eriksson now takes the perspective of an IP communications equipment manufacturer, and he sees lots of opportunities for the company to leverage market growth, both for wireline and wireless communications. He predicts that in the not-too-distant future, all telecommunications will become SIP-based as IP communications really takes off.

Ingate, Eriksson said, is sitting pretty in the SIP market, being recognized as an expert on this technology.

“We have state-of-the-art products, know-how and very talented staff that can deliver trusted SIP communication to our customers,” he said. “We have customers all over the planet, and there is a huge market potential for this type of edge product.”

Taking advantage of that potential, of course, will take hard work and dedication. Eriksson said Ingate will be stepping up its PR and sales promotions efforts, as well as forming partnerships with other companies in the space to help drive development of SIP and to help enterprises adopt this technology in a smart and sustainable way.

Eriksson also talked about the challenges enterprises face when adopting IP communications technology, shared some specifics about future plans for Ingate’s growth, and discussed the role carriers play in the SIP market. To read the full interview, click here
