AT&T Pushes to Extend Mobility FeatureBy Gary Kim, Contributing Editor Putting its money where its mouth is, AT&T has created a new business unit to promote mobile communications capability in devices ranging from computers and digital cameras to car-navigation and entertainment systems, says the Reuters (News - Alert) news agency.
Glenn Lurie, the executive who led AT&T’s negotiations with Apple for its exclusive U.S. iPhone (News - Alert) deal, will now work on introducing wireless links in devices other than mobile phones.
That's an effort roughly parallel to what supporters of the Clearwire and Xohm WiMAX (News - Alert) networks also are pursuing: figuring out ways to encourage mobile broadband applications all sorts of devices might be able to take advantage of.
Verizon (News - Alert), for its part, is working on a variety of new machine-to-machine applications that use the broadband network for instrumentation and telemetry applications.
Besides heading the emerging devices unit, Lurie will continue to run the company's national distribution business.
