Clearwave Mobile's iPhone App Gives Instant Push-Button Access to Emergency Alert Systems

By Marisa Torrieri, TMCnet Editor

Moms and dads with iPhone (News - Alert)-toting college kids and older parents will have one less reason to worry this fall.

Just in time for back-to-school season, Clearwave Mobile has released ICEbeacon, a new application for iPhones that gives emergency responders and pre-designated contacts real-time text alerts and patient information at the touch of a button.

“Let’s say you have a child in college in Virginia, and you live in California and they have an accident. You’re still going to be alerted,” Jess Taylor, Clearwave Mobile’s president, told TMCnet.

As soon as the downloaded ICEbeacon settles onto the iPhone’s home screen, all its user needs to do is push the green icon once to ignite the application, sending four text messages to three contacts and a first-responder center. The alert to first responders includes critical and potentially lifesaving data (such as allergies and blood type), and the phone number of the person’s first three pre-designated contacts. Simultaneously, the ICEbeacon user’s primary contacts – such as their mother, spouse or sibling – are sent a “call me” text message.

In developing ICE, “we talked to several first-responder groups and said, ‘how will this work best?’ and we based our application on that,” Taylor told TMC (News - Alert). “The purpose of the application is to get the best information the easiest way possible.”

The application features high-contrast colors so “in any lighting condition, I would be able to read what was there,” he added.

Until now, GPS apps have fallen short of giving emergency medical personnel the data they need to best treat patients on-site, or quickly notify next-of-kin and other important contacts, Taylor said. And although similar first-responder applications are available via the iPhone App Store, Taylor told TMC that none use the multiple-text-messaging format.

“Every one of those programs is just [relaying] information, they send an e-mail or they have a phone connect,” Taylor said. “We said, ‘that’s not useful enough. A lot of people don’t check their e-mail on an hourly basis.’”

ICEbeacon is available immediately for $2.99 through the iPhone App Store staring the week after Labor Day.
