Phone Systems: Making the Switch to VoIP

By Stefania Viscusi, Assignment Desk Editor

Since most business phone systems today have made the switch to VoIP, it's more important than every for decision-makers to weigh the pros and cons to choose the best option for their own particular needs.

While the well-known cost savings associated with VoIP are critical, industry critics also point to possible pitfalls that companies should consider before making the switch.

A recent VendogrGuru.com article, “Weighing Hidden Costs and Surprise Savings of VoIP Systems,” highlights the important points some advocates are pushing CIOs to consider.

For example, those businesses are placing a great amount of focus on reducing energy costs should understand that legacy phone systems require less power than VoIP and if the switch is made, other benefits to outweigh the increased electric bill will be necessary.

In addition to this, companies that use softphones or other advanced call management features on a user’s computer will increase the costs of powering computers, since around-the-clock power is needed.

There are however, additional cost-savings with dedicated VoIP phone systems that can also help companies save on their electric bills. And increasing competition among phone system providers in the market has decreased the cost of VoIP services over traditional phone systems.

Businesses are also moving to VoIP for the ability combine voice and data cables, the ability to go wireless, increased automation and the cost savings associated with less technical staff needed to maintain the technology.

Before business make the switch to VoIP phone systems, it’s important a thorough review of vendor offerings as well as research of energy audits and case studies is conducted.
