ADTRAN Selected by Arapahoe Telephone Company

By Anil Sharma, TMCnet Contributor

Nebraska-based Arapahoe Telephone Company has selected ADTRAN’s Total Access 5000 multi-service access and aggregation platform and Total Access 1124P outside plant broadband multimedia gateway) for its fiber-to-the-node deployment.

ADTRAN (News - Alert) officials said that this solution is expected to provide Arapahoe with a vastly improved access network capable of supporting the broadband needs of tomorrow. The ADTRAN Total Access 5000 is a carrier class multi-service access and aggregation platform that reportedly bridges the gap between existing and next-generation networks.

With an all-Ethernet core, the Total Access 5000 supports both legacy and emerging service interfaces over copper and fiber, easily scaling to support bandwidth-intensive applications.

The Total Access 1124P combines the technology and cost-savings benefits of an OSP BMG, which allows service providers to deliver baseband POTS and broadband multimedia to any customer over a single phone line, with a POTS to VoIP gateway to expand service delivery in the access network.

“It was time for a network upgrade to enhance our ability to offer broadband services to all of our customers. The Total Access 5000 had the best mix of transport and access technologies to meet all of our needs,” said John E. Koller, general manager, Arapahoe Telephone Company, in a statement. Arapahoe Telephone Company is an independent, family-owned carrier serving southern Nebraska.

Koller said that the company is building a core network of Total Access 5000s and expanding out to lower line count areas with the Total Access 1124Ps. This, he said was a more cost-effective solution than retrofitting legacy cabinets and also provided the added benefits of shortening loop lengths for next-generation broadband service delivery.

“Knowing that ADTRAN has tens of thousands of 1100s deployed, we were very comfortable with our decision,” Koller added.

P. Steven Locke, vice president of sales, service providers, ADTRAN Carrier Networks Division said that fiber-to-the-node is a great way to utilize the existing copper infrastructure for cost-effective delivery of enhanced broadband services.

“A gigabit Ethernet drop from any Total Access 5000 node is all that’s needed to push the 1124Ps deep into the service provider’s network. Being sealed, hardened and using line powering, means that the cost of deployment for the Total Access 1124P is kept to a minimum,” Locke said.

He said that ADTRAN has a long history of leadership in FTTN and the Total Access 1124P is a perfect solution for service providers like Arapahoe.
