Avaya, IBM to Provide UC, Security Interoperability

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributor

Avaya and IBM say they plan to expand their alliance to deliver unified communications solutions worldwide. Both companies will now focus on the integration of the new Avaya Aura architecture into existing IBM’s (News - Alert) converged communications services.

The expanded alliance is a communications solution that’s designed to improve productivity, and to streamline mission-critical and complex communication systems. Allowing users to communicate anywhere, regardless of device or network, it will provide a robust communications solution to global clients and government organizations.

The new solutions will help the customers to prevent current and emerging threats and help keep unified communications deployments secure. Attacks such as denial or interruption of services, phishing, eavesdropping and overall business interruption can now be prevented successfully before they make a lot of impact, said the company.

Avaya (News - Alert) and IBM have a number of integrated solutions across our unified communications portfolios and a long history of success in contact center deployments,” said Todd Abbott, senior vice president and president, Avaya Field Operations. “As part of our expanded alliance, we are building a tighter relationship around the services, solutions and security that enable customers to quickly reap the benefits of Avaya Aura.”

The new Avaya Architecture, used in this solution is anchored by the SIP-based, open-standards Aura Session Manager, which centralizes communications control and application integration. With this, clients can deploy services to users depending on what they need rather than by where they work. Also, enabling IBM to offer intrusion protection for Avaya Aura’s communication system, Avaya has certified the IBM Internet Security Systems’ (News - Alert) Proventia GX 5208 and Proventia Management SiteProtector SP1001 as compliant with IP telephony solutions from Avaya.

Recently, Broken Arrow Wear, a custom T-shirt company and online retailer announced the successful deployment of Avaya small business communications solution for improving employee communications, customer service and sales capabilities. The deployment will enable employees to serve customers better during the peak seasons. The company implemented Avaya IP Office which provides better call handling besides incorporating telecommuting and work-at-home capabilities.
