Tadiran Sets Sail with VoIP Mobility Solution on Deepwater Fleet

By Tim Gray, TMCnet Web Editor

While 71 percent of the earth’s surface is covered by water, a surprisingly small portion of that great wet mass is being served by some type of VoIP mobility solution.

If any company, wet or dry, was in need of an extensive VoIP mobility solution it is Edison Chouest Offshore.

The Louisiana-based outfit builds, services and operates a fleet of specialty vessels for some of the world’s largest organizations. This high-tech fleet is considered the most technologically advanced and fastest-growing offshore vessel service company in the world.

The company owns and operates a growing fleet of new generation offshore service vessels supporting a vast majority of the U.S. Gulf deepwater market, as well as a large independently owned fleet of research vessels. ECO's high-tech, high-capacity offshore vessels range from 87 feet to 348 feet.

However, the company needed it expand and improve its communications ability.

For that the called in Tadiran (News - Alert) Telecom Partner Global Communications. Tadiran recognized how Tadiran’s VoIP solutions could provide instant and seamless communications to better the Chouest offering.

The company started by installing fourteen Coral IPx systems in the corporate headquarters and shipyards. The Tadiran Coral Sea Softswitch is designed to save on conference call costs, as well as provide a centralized management for remote users.

“Next we starting networking in the remote sites,” said Global Managing Partner Amy Burke Freeman. “The only difference is that the remote sites are floating in every ocean in the world. The satellite communications to the ships are some of the clearest VoIP conversations I have ever heard.”

Now land-based employees have the ability to dial the ships as if they were an extension down the hall, according to Freeman.  And the crews abroad can dial their families back home using PSTN connections from the home office.

Global Communications has installed Coral IPx systems in each office and shipyard.

The plan, says Freeman, is to equip each new ship as well as every ship in the fleet as it comes to port for maintenance. The opportunity turned into the dozens of Tadiran systems and thousands of IP telephones and is a terrific example of the power of Tadiran’s VoIP.

The Israeli telecom equipment provider has been making a lot of waves both on and off the seas lately. As TMCnet recently reported, one of the Southeast Asia’s largest state-owned commercial banks, with more than 100 branches, transaction offices, and subsidiary locations, signed with the company for its services.
