Comverse Joins GSM Association Working Group to Drive IMS Adoption

By Michelle Robart, TMCnet Editor

Comverse, a company providing software and systems for enabling IP communications, today revealed it has joined the GSM Association’s industry effort to further drive the use of IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem (News - Alert)) for providing mobile phone communication services.

By joining the Rich Communication Suite (RCS) program, Comverse (News - Alert) can further its goal to bring RCS services into the mobile marketplace. In addition, the company can enhance interoperability, the user experience and increase service providers’ revenues.

The GSM Association’s telecom network operator members currently serve more than 85 percent of the world’s mobile phone users.

Brian Partridge, director of enabling technologies at Yankee Group, a technology research and consulting firm, explained, “RCS paves the way towards integrating advanced capabilities into the mobile and fixed environments to enable a richer user experience that includes in-call multimedia sharing, conversational messaging, presence-enhanced contact management and more.”

He added that Comverse’s participation in the working group is a positive sign that could help push RCS to become implemented industry-wide. Enabling interoperability across key markets is crucial to wide service adoption and the success of IMS.

According to Comverse, RCS is set to help improve the user experience by enabling presence information in the address book to show, at a glance, who is available to talk or chat.

In addition, handsets will display the conversation history of message chat sessions in progress. Multi-party chat sessions will be easier to initiate and use, and during voice calls, users will be able to switch out live and prerecorded video and view Web sites and maps together.

With Comverse’s IP messaging and communications portfolio, operators are able to migrate to IP-based networks. This ability should quicken time to revenue when rolling out RCS services and further establish Comverse as an innovative provider of end-to-end solutions for interoperable enriched communication.

“The RCS Initiative is in sync with Comverse’s Converged Messaging vision,” said John Bunyan, chief marketing officer at Comverse. “Our Converged Messaging platform and portfolio support the key enablers that allow service providers to roll out the Rich Communication Suite (News - Alert).”

Last week, Comverse demonstrated the RCS experience at its booth at the GSM Mobile World Congress (News - Alert) held in Barcelona.

"Comverse's personalized communication services take full advantage of the Intel (News - Alert) Atom processor's media processing capabilities," said Daphna Steinmetz, chief innovation officer at Comverse. "This successful synergy helps redefine the socialization possibilities on a mobile device."

Comverse is a global software and systems provider enabling value-added services for voice, messaging, mobile Internet and mobile advertising; converged billing and customer management; and IP communications. The company’s wide ranging customer base spans more than 130 countries and covers over 500 communication service providers serving more than two billion subscribers.
